During the course of the year we are asked as a parish to take up various collections to support national Catholic Charities and agencies. These take the form of a retiring collection. It is important to emphasise that all collections taken in church are an invitation to contribute and while it is important that we are as generous as possible no one should feel obliged to contribute. There are various reasons why you may not wish to donate; perhaps money is tight at a particular moment or simply you do not want to give to a particular charity or agency. The important thing is that we think conscientiously about whether we want to and whether we can afford to contribute. This is a personal decision for each one to make. All contributions great and small are appreciated. Thank you for your generosity to the parish and to the second collections. Listed below are the collections which we are asked to take up during 2018: Caritas Diocese of Shrewsbury (Christmas); Priests’ Retirement Fund (14 January); Lenten Alms (Lent); Cafod Fast I (23 February); Cafod II (5th October); Holy Places (Good Friday); World Communications Day (13 May); Day for Life (17 June); Peter’s Pence (1 July); Apostleship of the Sea (8th July); Home Mission Sunday (16September); World Mission Sunday APF (21 October); Clergy Education and Training Fund (18 November) Some time during the year we are also visited by a different missionary congregation whom we are asked to support. This year it is our friends and neighbours the Spiritans.

St Columba’s: 13th-14th Jan, St. Theresa’s: 28th Jan.

The annual Special Collection for the Retired Priests’ Fund is being held on these dates. With your help, we can build up the Fund to help meet the future needs of our sick and retired priests.

Special Envelopes are available for you to use. If you use weekly Offertory Envelopes, please can I ask that you write in your envelope number. If you do not have your Offertory Envelope with you, or you give to your Parish by means of a Standing Order, write in your name and home address. In this way, it will be possible to reclaim the tax on your donation if you have joined the Gift Aid scheme. A Leaflet about the Fund is also available which explains how to make a regular donation to the Fund by Standing Order, or how you can make your donation by cheque. It also explains how to take advantage of Gift Aid for your donations to the Fund. I ask that you give as generously as you can to this very worthy cause and would also like to express my sincere gratitude for your continued support. With every blessing,

+ Mark Bishop of Shrewsbury
