ST. COLUMBA FEAST DAY:
The Feast Day of our Patron Saint is 9th June. Born in Donegal in 521 into a royal family, he trained as a monk and himself founded a number of monasteries in different parts of Ireland. In 565 he and 12 companions sailed for Scotland, setting up a new monastery on the island of Iona. From this base St. Columba and his successors had enormous influence on the course Christian history throughout Scotland – and in NE England through the foundation of Lindisfarne. He died in 597, the same year as the arrival of St. Augustine to the Kentish shore.
FUTURE OF CHURCHES TOGETHER IN CHESTER;
It has recently been decided that Churches Together in Chester is an unnecessary layer between Churches Together in Cheshire and the local Churches Together Groups (such as those for Blacon and Upton). However, the current Chairman (Fr. Paul Shaw) and Secretary & Treasurer (Revd. Brian Holroyd) are holding a short meeting for anyone interested (ministerial or lay) to confirm this decision. The meeting will be at St Werburgh`s Presbytery, Grosvenor Park Road, Chester CH1 1QJ on THURSDAY 14th JUNE at 7.30 pm. All will be welcome. The closure decision will not directly affect the workings of the Blacon and Upton Churches Together groups.
WIRRAL COASTAL WALK. SUN 24th JUNE:
This is an organised sponsored walk around the tip of the Wirral peninsula, in which CAFOD and many other charities take part. In the past fifteen years, CAFOD walkers have raised over £182,000 to support work with some of the poorest communities around the world. This year proceeds will go to CAFOD’s general emergency response fund. The walk can be of varying length 4, 10 or 15 miles, mainly flat, making it suitable for the very young as well as the not so young! For further information and sponsorship packs, please ring 0151 632 5504 or 01244 677594 – Katie Hallows, CAFOD Community Participation Coordinator.
